Moving can be so overwhelming and you never realize just how important the small things are until you start unpacking. I realized there was so much I wished we had when I began unpacking all of our possessions. This is our first time living as a family on our own and there are many possessions I never even thought would be important because we had them in our previous shared home.
Don’t let it overwhelm you into panic. Instead start a plan and slowly get your hands on the possessions that you need/want for your new home.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
I reminded myself that it is okay to ask family and friends if they might have some of the possessions we are in search of. Sometimes you will find some of the small and possibly big items you need by just asking if anyone has anything they are getting rid of.
Of course you should always thank for friends and family that help you out because it is important that they know you really appreciate their help in making your new home complete.
Thrift and Second Hand stores are your friend.
After you have searched and found some items from your family the next logical step is to search second hand and thrift stores for items you may need. We managed to find a table and chair set, a couch, recliner and a bunch of kitchen odds and ends this way.
Always remember you can keep searching and that you will find things as you go. Don’t feel rushed and think that you need every item right away.
Buy the small things.
You can buy the small things that you aren’t finding everywhere else as they tend to be cheaper and easier to be able to afford after purchasing a new home. I found a few items on Amazon that were reasonably priced and really helped pull my house together. Keep reading to see what I found as they might help you as well.
Wooden Slack Hangers
I was able to find a set of wooden slack hangers on Amazon that fit my needs. These are just under $2 a hanger which seemed very reasonable for a set of nice wooden hangers that will hold up over time. As someone who has a struggle with clips and such I was very pleased that these ones were easy for me to use. All you do is push the hook back and it unlatches the wood pieces. I set it down on the bed and slide the pants/skirt waist band between the wood slats and then pull the hook back into place to secure it closed. The hangers have a tight grip so that even heavy jeans don’t slide out from in between the wood.
The hangers came in a set of 10 and that was the perfect amount for us to start with. It gave me 5 hangers and my hubby 5 hangers. You can even select which stain color you would like so that they match the other wood in your bedroom. I will admit that down the road we will need to buy more as we get more settled in because I don’t have enough for all of my dress pants, jeans, and skirts to be hung with at the moment.
Olive Oil Set
The second item we found for our home was an Olive Oil Set. While I know it isn’t something that was absolutely needed. I did want to buy something small and decorative to match my kitchen decor. When I saw this Olive Oil set I knew that I needed it. We were painting our kitchen purple and these bottles were going to look stunning in our new kitchen.
I can tell you I wasn’t wrong! This Olive Oil set looks amazing in my new kitchen and works splendidly! I chose to put Olive Oil in one bottle and Sunflower Oil in the other because I use those two oils the most when I am cooking. They are now placed next to my stove for easy access when I am cooking in the kitchen. The spouts are very easy to put in and remove from the bottles, while staying secure and not allowing any oil to leak from the neck of the bottle.
As we were moving things into our cupboards it quickly came to my attention that we don’t have a lot of space to store food in our kitchen so I had to start thinking creatively without breaking the bank. I wanted a way to get big items out of the cabinets without having to store them in another room. That is when I thought canisters would be a great way to free up some space.
I opted for a set of clear acrylic canisters because I knew they would be lightweight and I wouldn’t have to be as worried about my toddler son breaking something made of glass or ceramic. This particular set was under $20 for 4 canisters on Amazon and gave me a place to store my flour, sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar without needing them to be stored in my kitchen cabinets.
As I said earlier buying small things to help make your new home really feel like yours can be helpful. One thing I realized was that I did not own a vase for flowers. I had used my mother-in-laws vases when we lived with her so that meant I needed to get my hands on a vase. I wanted one that would look modern and be customizable. That is why I was excited to get my hands on the Memo Vase. The Memo Vase is a heart shaped vase that comes with a little magnetic white board with a dry erase marker. This gives you the ability to write a little message on the vase whenever you fill it with flowers. Splash Brands also makes some other innovative products that you can check out on their website.
