DIY Glowing Latern

July 27, 2020 by Ashley Leave a Comment

Things have been a little crazy around here since Covid-19 hit, just like they probably are in your home and that has led to us getting creative and our children’s therapists getting just as creative. This past week we made DIY glowing lanterns with my preschooler’s recreational therapist, Juanakee.

It was a fun project for us because my little guy had to step out of his comfort zone and risk getting a little messy while making some extra fun. It’s been such a hit that I decided to recreate this impromptu project on here so that you might be able to get a little joy from it all like we have.

What you’ll need:

  • Jar (preferably plastic)
  • Large glow sticks
  • Glitter
  • Sequins or foil stars
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun & glue(optional)

Let’s get started!

1. Start by opening your glow stick packages. Have your child open up the jar and have them help you crack the glow sticks to activate them. You will want to make sure it’s very broken up before cutting one end off.

After cutting the end off have your child shake the contents of the tube into the jar. Do this with all of your glow sticks.

2. Add glitter. Now you will want to add in glitter to the jar. I suggest silver or white as they won’t darken the jar up. Add glitter little by little until you like how it looks.

3. Screw on the lid. Once the kids is on have your child shake it up until it’s completely covered in the glow in the dark ink and glitter.

4. Turn off all the lights. See the magic at work!

5. Glue on lid. (Optional) If you are afraid of your kid getting into the jar then glue the lid shut. This will make it so you can’t add more glow stick ink when it stops glowing so I’d suggest not glueing on the lid.

5 Trendy Ways to Use Pallets as Furniture

October 18, 2016 by Ashley Leave a Comment

Wood pallets have changed the way we think about furniture. From being earth-friendly to being outrageously stylish, it seems pallets have found a way into our homes and into our hearts. Here are 5 trendy ways to use pallets as furniture to give your home some great style.

pallets-furniture

#1 Coffee Table

Pallets make great, totally customizable coffee tables. You can buy them pre-made or do it yourself for a perfectly unique look for your space. These coffee tables can be colorful, classic, contemporary, beachy cool, or any other style your heart desires.

These gorgeous tables are not only on-trend, but they’re super easy to make yourself. Pallets are cheap and all you really need to make them ready for your home is a bucket of stain, paint, lacquer, or just a stack of sandpaper. Simply finish them any way you want, let them dry and move them where you want them. Furniture has never been so effortless.

#2 Bookshelves

Bring fashion and function together with a pallet bookshelf. Pallet bookshelves come in hundreds of shapes, sizes, and styles to perfectly match your aesthetic. From wall mounted shelves to big bookcases, you can get any book shelving you need with all the endless possibilities of pallets.

#3 Headboards

It might sound simple, but a large painted pallet can make an absolutely adorable headboard. Stain it for a more traditional look, or paint it to match any color scheme.

While you can buy pallet headboards, it’s much cheaper to make them yourself. Besides, if you DIY, it is almost guaranteed to go perfectly with the decor of your room. There’s none of that frustrating shopping around and not finding exactly what you want.

#4 End Tables

Pallets make for excellent DIY end tables. Use reclaimed, or new pallets to create beautiful artwork that will add beauty and functionality to your home. Besides, you’ll have the pride of telling your guests you made them yourself.

Or, you can purchase pre-made pallet end tables for the same gorgeous look with less work on your part. Either way, it’s a lovely win-win situation.

#5 Chairs

Pallet chairs are all the rage for both indoor and outdoor furniture. These simple, hearty chairs make excellent, long lasting furniture that you can customize for color, pattern, style, and trend.

Another great aspect of pallet chairs is that they’re easy to change. If you decide that next year, you’re not so in love with those blue cushions you have been using, then simply swap them out for new cushions. It is so much less expensive than buying a whole new furniture set every time you want to change the look of your living room.

Pallets make great furniture. Either purchase them pre-made or do it yourself to create that perfect aesthetic you have been searching for. Pallet furniture is sturdy, green, and totally cool. The possibilities are endless. Pallet furniture allows you to do something that most other furniture restricts; your imagination.

Build Your Cat a Better Life

January 23, 2016 by Ashley 1 Comment

I love my cats, even if I have been only talking about babies as of late.  I blame that on the fact that I am pregnant; I get distracted by all of the new baby things going on in my life.  One thing that I have noticed is that cats and babies both are very expensive.  I have always tried to find ways to cut corners when it comes to buying big ticket items because living on a fixed income can be difficult at times.  Now, with my baby on the way I am getting even more creative on saving a buck here and there.

Why not build your cat a better life?

That is why I was so excited when I found this awesome infographic that shows some amazing like do it yourself projects for to help you build your cat a better life.  You will see some awesome toys, trees, and more things that your kitties will love.  I have looked into many of these products in the store and I just cannot let myself buy them because they cost so much money.  I would rather spend a little extra money on buying them premium food and litter instead of gadgets and gizmos.

Now that I know how to make much of this I am thinking I will be making a couple of these things.  It will be quite easy for me seeing as I have a lot of the materials already lying around the house.  I might as well put some of these unnecessary items to use especially as something special and fun for them before the baby arrives and disrupts my normal routines with them.

Build Your Own DIY Media Kit

January 22, 2016 by Ashley 5 Comments

Mini Challenge for Blogathon Bash

This post: How to Build Your Own DIY Media Kit is a Mini Challenge for the Biannual Blogathon Bash that is currently up and running.  Everyone is welcome to take in the knowledge that I am putting forth however only participants in the Blogathon Bash will be able to participate in winning any of the prizes for completing the challenges.  If you would like to join in it isn’t too late to sign-up.

How to Build Your Own DIY Media Kit

If you missed the first post that I wrote entitled What is a Media Kit? you will want to head on over there and read that post first.  It will get you prepared for making your own DIY Media Kit.  Once you have read through that post I will be waiting here for you.  Oh, and I would suggest completing the task I left for you at the end as well before you come back to this post.

I am patient.  I will wait.

Good, good you are back and prepared I assume.  Let me jump right in then.

diy media kit example

Where to Begin

Now that you have seen my basic example of a media kit you can start to piece together just how to build your own DIY Media Kit.  You can create your media kit on a variety of different platforms.  This specific one I made using Picmonkey; if you purchase the membership which I highly recommend you get full use of their tools.  You can chose a variety of different layouts for your media kit to suit your own needs.  You can also use Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, or many other photo editing programs that are out there.

You will want the most prominent and important information to be showcased at the beginning of your media kit.  I personally feel like the following list showcases what brands will be seeking from your media kit in order of importance.

  1. Logo
  2. About me/About the blog
  3. Website URL
  4. Statistics/Analytics
  5. What you have to offer
  6. Author Face-shot
  7. Contact Information
  8. Social Media Channels
  9. Past Brand Collaborations

This particular DIY Media Kit is a one page kit that you would then convert from an image or word document to a PDF file.  There are much more detailed media kits out there that you can put together if you want to include more in depth information about what your specific rates are for each type of sponsorship on your blog.  You want to make sure that your media kit is bold, easy to read, and not too crowded.  If you are unsure if it is any of these things reach out to someone else for their opinion.  You don’t want brands to struggle to get your information.  If they struggle they will be more likely to just walk away and not work with you.

Adding images and color to the media kit can also be beneficial though you will want to remember that people may decide to print it out and if they do it will more than likely be in black and white so you may want to make sure that everything is legible if printed out in black and white.

Mini Challenge

For this mini challenge I challenge you to create your own DIY Media Kit.  If you aren’t anal it shouldn’t take you very long to complete.  Once your media kit is complete upload it to your blog.  I recommend you upload it to your Media or Advertising page on your blog.  If you do not have one of those pages then create a new page titled as such and upload the image to that page.  I suggest you link the image to the PDF so that brands can download the media kit for themselves.  If you don’t want to link the PDF to the image then just make a text link telling them to click here to download the media kit.

Once you have done this I would love to see your completed media kit so come back and leave a comment with a link to the media kit.  In addition, if you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments below or reach out to me on Facebook or Twitter and I will answer your questions as soon as possible.
