Zaycon Foods Boneless Chicken Breasts

December 7, 2013 by Ashley 5 Comments

Zaycon Foods Boneless Chicken Breasts Review

Back in June I was able to tell you all about Zaycon Foods when I learned all about their wonderful services that they offer to purchase meat and other foods in bulk.  I was really excited when I found out that I would be allowed to review one of their 40lb boxes of Boneless Chicken Breasts so that I could sample their service as well as their meat.  It took many months before they had the chicken out here in Michigan, but it was well worth the wait.

For the past 10 months we have been purchasing all of our meat from the meat market because we can find it cheaper than at the grocery store.  Zaycon Foods prices all seem to fall into the same general price range as our local meat market though the prices could vary with your local meat markets.  The benefit that I found with Zaycon is buying the food in bulk.  We go through a lot of meat in our house.  What with three adults here all the time and two teenaged boys here a few days a week.

The pickup was nice and easy.  I was told that the truck would be waiting at the Century Bowl here in Waterford.  I pulled in and immediately saw the truck sitting there with cars already lined up by it.  I decided to snap a quick picture before I got in line.  I knew I was going to have to wait and I was only 5 minutes away from my home so what would a couple extra minutes matter?

Zaycon Foods Truck

Getting up to the truck I just showed them my receipt on my phone instead of printing it out for ease and to save paper and money in the long run.  They immediately grabbed the box put a plastic liner down in the trunk of my car and set the box on top of that for me so that I did not have to do any work and so that my car stayed nice and clean.  Going there I was unsure how the meat would come packaged, but was not too concerned since I didn’t have a long drive.

Getting home the men of the house were nice enough to carry this box inside for me because 40 pounds of chicken in a box just wasn’t going to happen.  There was no way that I was going to be able to carry that inside myself.  The unveiling was exciting.  Well, it was for me anyway.  I wanted to see how big these chicken breasts were.  The box once opened reviled a thick blue plastic bag/liner with chicken in bags under that.  This was how they managed to keep the chicken juice from seeping through and soaking the box.

You can see the thick blue bag here as well as the Safe Handling Instructions to make sure that you do not contaminate anything with raw chicken.  You can all see the logo there that shows you that the chicken is All Natural.  They were also organic and hormone free.  They might be hormone free, but I am telling you that  when you see these chicken breasts your jaw will drop just like mine did.

The breasts were just monsters.  I mean it.  They were bigger than my hand and when I weighed them on my Ozeri Touch Professional Digital Kitchen Scale I found them to be 1/2 pound on average in size.  This weight was after I cut the breasts apart since they came attached together.  We decided it would be a good idea to bag them two breasts per bag so that wee could easily defrost just enough for a meal.

Zaycon Chicken Review 2

You can see what I mean by monster chicken breasts.  I was not expecting such large pieces of chicken.  The process of cutting apart all of the chicken breasts and bagging them took me 45 minutes.  I tried to count them all, but I lost count which means I cannot tell you exactly how many chicken breasts came in my Zaycon Foods order.

The chicken did fill up our freezer though!  I am glad we had a lot of empty room in the freezer at the time.  If we hadn’t we would have had to make room by cooking something.  We kept out two bags that were to be for dinner that night.

Zaycon Chicken Review 5As you can see we had a lot of chicken in our freezer.  We have since eaten most of the chicken and have loved it every single time.  I love that it was never frozen before we got it so that we could package it how we like without having to thaw and repackage or anything like that.  Zaycon Foods really impressed me.  You can go to their website to find out where the closest drop off is for you as well as to find out what shipments are coming your way!

5 Tasty Ways to Eat Pork

October 17, 2013 by Ashley 2 Comments

If you’re a fan of pork, your mouth may well be watering already from the title of this post. In fact, pork is one of the most versatile meats you’ll find on the butcher’s shelf, what with its many smoked, sausage and joint varieties.

Thanks to online resources, there are thousands of pork recipes accessible to all, each one more scrumptious than the next. Here are just a few fantastic ideas for pork dishes that will have you licking your plate and looking for second helpings…

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Lunch doesn’t get much better than a fresh roll filled with juicy shredded pork that has been marinating in sweet barbeque-style sauce for hours, making it tender enough to pull from the bone and giving the dish its name. The pulled pork sandwich is a favourite in the southern United States, but the dish has started popping up in eateries across the UK and Europe.

Prosciutto Pizza

Whilst fast food delivery chains are doing their best to besmirch the delicious name of pizza, recent years have seen a resurgence of authentic, thin-crust, wood-fired versions of the classic Italian dish. For an extra tasty treat, add some prosciutto – thinly-sliced dry-cured Parma ham – to tpahe top. Yum!

Pork Chops & Apple sauce

A classic American dish, made famous when it was served on 1970s TV show ‘The Brady Bunch’, pork chops served with a side of apple sauce is far more delicious than it sounds. The apple sauce complements the pork’s sweet juices perfectly. To enhance the experience, why not try making cider gravy to go with it?

Crispy Pork Belly

So much of what we enjoy about eating comes down to texture. The exquisite, salty crunch that comes from sinking your teeth into a bit of crispy pork belly is a delight to the senses. The trick to cooking crispy pork belly is to put it in a very hot oven (the highest it goes!) for 10-15 minutes first, before turning the oven down (170°C/325°F) to roast for a little over an hour.

Split Pea & Ham Soup

Winter’s on its way, and with it comes soup season. You can’t go wrong with a hot bowl of split pea soup with ham. The sweetness of the peas, the saltiness of the ham, together with the savoury additions of bay leaf and celery, creates a delicious flavour profile. To make this dish extra special, go with thickly diced, smoked gammon.

Day 2: Food I Ate Today (Recently) – Pulled Pork Taco

September 2, 2013 by Ashley 2 Comments

30 Days of Pictures Challenge

Day 2 doneToday’s challenge was to post a picture of something I ate today, but it is early and I am going to be heading to sleep soon so instead you get a picture of something I ate recently.  I had been meaning to post up a recipe for these deep fried pulled pork taco or burritos and just have not yet.  These were an amazing little thing that my father in law whipped up with some of our left-over pulled pork.

I have to admit they were freaking amazing.  If you are a fan of Chimichanga’s then I believe you will like these.  They had that same texture as them, but all the meat was so good.  But then again how can you really turn some smoked pulled pork turn bad?  You can’t and right now writing this is making me wish we still had some left-overs but we don’t.

If you would like to join us you can go HERE to find the daily challenges and find out how to link up with us.

Chicken Salad Recipe Made With Leftovers

August 24, 2013 by Ashley Leave a Comment

Chicken Salad Recipe

If you saw my Chicken Salad Leftovers Wordless Wednesday post this week you will know that I had a ton of leftovers this week.  Last weekend we smoked two whole chickens and a 10 pound pork butt and for just our family that is a TON of meat.  We had about one whole chicken for leftovers and over half of the pork butt left.  That meant I needed to get creative and find some fun and interesting ways to use our leftovers, right?  Right!

If you also have some leftover, overripe Bananas you should check out my Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe while you are here.  It is a great desert bread for your children to devour!

Healthy Cooking Tips

One of my goals this year has been to work on healthy cooking in my home and ever since moving back in February things have been changing slowly.  I have wanted to eat healthier and cook healthier and increase the different recipes that I know and can cook.  So, if you read about my move then you already know that I am now living with my boyfriend, his dad and our pets as well as his dog.  Because of his dad being here I am learning to cook more and am learning little tips and treasures that I will be remembering to help me when it comes to cooking and baking. I hope that this little picture will help you out as well. Because I put together a short list of items that can be substituted in many recipes for other things that are healthier. I am hoping to make more images like this with additional cooking tips as time goes on and I come up with more for you to enjoy.
