Making Life for Your Elderly Parent More Comfortable

June 22, 2014 by Ashley Leave a Comment

Taking care of a sick parent can be very challenging for many people. It can be particularly difficult if you are living with them. You will need to understand what steps to take to make them more comfortable. Here are some things that you should consider.

Tips for Memory Care

Memory problems are highly prevalent among seniors. Most experts believe that between five to eight percent of people over 65 have dementia, but there are a number of factors that can increase the risk for some people. You will want to understand the risks and take steps to keep their brain healthy. Here are some tips that you can follow:

  • Try to keep their brains active. Seniors that are processing new information and making decisions tend to be less likely to develop dementia. Of course, you will need to be aware of their limitations, but it is generally best to keep them as involved and engaged as possible.
  • Provide fewer decisions if they have developed dementia. Many seniors are overwhelmed with decision-making after the onset of dementia. You will need to be aware of these limitations and try to accommodate them.

Watching a parent suffer from dementia can be very difficult. It is a good idea to understand how to prevent the disease if it isn’t too late. Otherwise, you will need to know how to help them cope with it if they are already suffering from it.

Keeping Them in Good Spirits

Seniors are often prone to depression and loneliness. You will need to find ways to help keep your parents happy while they are living with you. Here are some things that you will need to consider.

Get In-house Support

You should consider working with in-home care experts to help your elderly parent deal with any struggles they are facing. These experts can also give you some perspective on their issues and the steps that you will want to take to deal with them.

Pet Therapy

Pet therapy has become a common way to help seniors manage stress and fight depression. They can also keep them company while you are away at work. A number of animals are specifically trained to help aging people.

Find Appropriate Music

Many seniors also feel that music is a great tool to keep them entertained and reduce depression. It has also been shown to be effective for helping people with dementia. You will want to base your choices of music around the problems and challenges that they are suffering from.

You will want to find some relaxing and stimulating songs that can help.  Research has shown that seniors are most stimulated by songs from their own era, as well as those that have some personal significance. You will want to choose more soothing music if they seem agitated.

Throwback Thursday: MDA Camp #tbt

June 5, 2014 by Ashley Leave a Comment

MDA Camp
Teenage me on the right at MDA Camp.

Summer is around the corner and it has me thinking about MDA Camp. I loved my week long overnight summer camps. This picture is from the year that we were at the NIU campus in Illinois. It was a lot of fun staying in the dorm rooms. This was during my high school years though I am trying to remember which specific year this was. It would have been the summer before or after sophomore year.

If you know some one with muscular dystrophy who does not go to camp I would suggest sending them to the MDA USA website to check it out.  You can also volunteer to help out at the local MDA Summer Camp and they are almost always looking for more volunteers.  I can guarantee that you will have the time of your life and make some child’s summer a special one.

Come link up your Throwback Thursday posts!

Hockey & MS Awareness all in one Place

MS Awareness

Picture courtesy of Fox Sports Network.

I am a huge hockey fan (Go Red Wings!) so when I heard that goalie Josh Harding of The Minnesota Wild was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) I knew I needed to write about it.  He has not let his diagnosis change anything.  He is still out there on the ice playing professional hockey.  I believe he knows his days are numbered so he probably wants to play the game for as long as he can and from what I can see he is still an amazing goalie.  Some of the saves that he makes on  the ice are ones that make you question how he could have possibly got there to stop the puck, but he did.

He seems to have his good days and his off days but that is something that all players go through.  I think it is amazing to see that he did not let such a scary diagnosis bring him down.  From all of the quotes I have read in articles and listened to in videos he is just pushing himself even harder.

“It would make me happy to overcome this – not just overcome this, but to really succeed with it. I don’t want people treating me different. I don’t want people feeling bad for me.” – Josh Harding

What is MS?

Since I have gone on and on about Josh Harding it’s time for me to tell you what MS actually is.  MS is a completely uncontrollable and unpredictable debilitating disease that affects your Central Nervous System which consists of your brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves (nerves for your eyes).  Due to it affecting all of these things it can cause anything from numbness in the limbs (like it can do with CMT) to paralysis and possible loss of vision.

MS is different from CMT because it is not caused from a problem with the chromosomes; it is an auto immune disease that attacks the myelin (the protective cover around the nerve) of the Central Nervous System which causes damage and creates the symptoms that I discussed above.

Do you know anyone with MS?

I have known a few people with MS and have watched them deteriorate.  It is hard to watch but some of them can be the bravest people out there.
