Autumn Hair – 5 Tips to Go Darker for Fall

September 11, 2014 by Ashley Leave a Comment

The weather is already changing.  I cannot believe that this will be the first weekend of 60 degree weather.  For me it is great; I get feeling back in my hands and I have far less problems with my disability.  There are a lot of different reasons to love this time of year and it also means things are about to change.

Fall is just around the corner, good things are coming; autumn leaves, crisp refreshing air, pumpkin lattes…  A new rich, deep hue for you!  Here are some tips from Madison Reed for when you are getting ready to go darker.

1. Put Your Pigment Back

When going lighter for summer, pigments are stripped from the hair. This could be done purposely by lightening, highlights, or bleach, or it could be something natural that happens from sun exposure or from taking a dip in the pool. So, if pigments were taken out, we need to put them back in to go darker. This would be a great time to be a red head before eventually settling on a brunette shade to wow!

2. Keep Your Skin Tone in Mind

Adding tones to your locks is a lovely way to make your color rich and vibrant. But are you a cool or a warm skin tone? Generally people with cooler undertone like to wear silver jewelry and look great in cool colors like blue and white. Tones like mahogany, ash, and violet will look awesome on you!  People with warmer undertones find that gold looks best on them and can wear yellows and cream colors with ease. Reds, golds and copper look great on warm tones.

3. Go One Shade Lighter to Start

It is much easier to go darker than it is to go lighter. Choose a shade in the tonal family that you want and go one shade lighter. You just may end up loving the results, if not it’s a quick fix to go a bit darker on the next round.

4. Keep Your Ends in Mind

The summer tends to put a little bit of wear and tear on our hair with all the sun, swimming and fun. This makes our ends more porous, which means it wants to drink that color up. When coloring your hair darker it is important to keep this in mind. Application is key! Start darkening hair at the root and leave in for optimal gray coverage, once this has had time to process start combing color down to your mid-lengths and ends to finish the process. The ends don’t need as much time.

 5. Use Color-Safe Shampoo

It is important to take care of your color even after the process. Don’t wash that beautiful color down the drain. Color-safe shampoo’s are made to be gentle, have extra moisturizer, and keep your color vibrant. Try Madison Reed’s Madison Reed nourishing, color enhancing shampoo and conditioner set–it even has natural UV protection to keep the sun’s rays from dulling down your color.

Pond Filters and Bathroom Vents: Proactive Home Maintenance

June 24, 2013 by Ashley 1 Comment

When you’re busy with kids, work, and taking care of your home, it’s easy to let the housework and home maintenance slide. You’re working hard just to keep up with the daily must-do tasks. Home improvement hardly seems like it’s necessary until something you can’t live without breaks down. It’s especially difficult to justify home maintenance when you’re living on a tight financial budget, but while basic home maintenance feels costly in the moment, it could save you thousands in the long-run. Check out these common proactive home maintenance problems and how you can easily fix them.

Backyard Blunders

lotus on the waterIf you have a beautiful backyard with nice features, such as a pond, a garden, or picturesque trees, some basic yearly maintenance will keep these features enjoyable – and keep you from having to shell out a bunch of money to fix problems that could have easily been prevented. Purchase a pond filter from www.swallowaquatics.co.uk to keep the water from becoming stagnant and your fish happy and healthy. Maintain your garden to keep it from attracting unwanted pests. If your beautiful trees are becoming overgrown, they may be at risk for falling on your house, your neighbor’s house, or one of your vehicles. Take a look at the overgrown branches each year and do the needed maintenance. When the wind picks up, you’ll be glad you did.

Cleaning Bathroom Vents

If your bathroom vent hasn’t been cleaned in a while, or if you don’t even have a bathroom vent, chances are the harmful and unsightly mold is growing inside your walls – and it’s only a matter of time until the mold begins to soften and warp your drywall. Vents are very important in bathroom spaces, where humid air can affect the walls. It’s easy to screw open a vent and clean it out. Plan to do so at least once a year.

Termite Checks

Insects can be the most difficult monsters – they may be lurking under your bed, and while they won’t eat you, they may be eating your house. Regular insect inspections are very important for maintaining a safe home. It may be inconvenient and feel expensive to move out of your house for a few days while it’s tented for insects, but it will save you a lot of inconvenience and money in the long-run to take care of termites before they take care of you.

Protecting Your Eyes From UV Rays

I wrote this review while participating in an influencer campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of HealthyWomen and VISTAKON® Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and received a promotional item from Mom Central to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Eye protection against UV rays is something I have always taken seriously.  It might come from the fact that I come from a family where Retina Pigmentosa runs deep.  I have watched my Grandfather Joseph, Aunt, and Cousin all lose their vision as they grew/grow older.  RP is a hereditary condition that there is no cure for yet, however that does not mean  that you should not keep your eyes as healthy as you can with or without it.

The Sun & Your Eyes: What You Need to Know To Stay Safe From UV Rays

The first and foremost topic is protection from UV Rays. Researchers have said that a significant amount of damage can be done before you are 18 years of age.  That is a reminder that not only adults should be wearing sunglasses, but children should be, too.  People with glasses like me may have always struggled to find a way to get UV protection, but there are options out there for you.

Option one is to get clip-on’s that go over your glasses.  These work for most people but when your lens’ start getting real thick this can cause issues.  The second option is to by Transitions on your glasses that can get really dark.  I always get Transitions because they work so well.  If that is too expensive of an option for you then there is still another couple of options.  You can buy a separate pair of prescription sunglasses or you can buy a pair of sunglasses to wear over top of your regular glasses.

Now, what you contact wearers might not know is that you have UV protection options too!  Up until just the other day I did not know that there was a UV protection option with contacts.  I probably didn’t know this because most contact lens companies do not offer UV protection contacts, but ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses, or for those who prefer a daily disposable contact lens, 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Contact Lenses, offer the highest level of UV-blocking available in a contact lens.*

*UV-blocking contact lenses are beneficial in helping to protect against harmful UV rays entering into the eye, long-term clinical studies have not been done to show that they directly reduce the risk of any specific eye disease or condition. That is why they should always be worn in conjunction with high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

I have a couple of other tips that I know are things that I often forget to think about in regards to eye care from Healthy Women‘s website.

  • Remember that direct sunlight isn’t the only threat to your eyes. Reflected UV rays can also be harmful. For example, fresh snow reflects as much as 80 percent of UV radiation; dry sand about 15 percent; and sea foam about 25 percent. And, because you’re more likely to look down than up, more UV light is reflected directly into your eyes. Hats with brims offer no protection from reflected UV rays.
  • Select darker lenses, particularly if your eyes are light sensitive. Gray lenses offer less color distortion than other color lenses, though no more protection.
  • Don’t just select sunglasses because they look cool make sure that it says that they block 99% of UV rays.
